NASHVILLE -- The Civil War hadn't yet broken out when Zadoc Levy traded his pushcart for a small storefront in downtown Nashville. Today, the business that the Bavarian immigrant founded 150 years ago continues to thrive, with the fifth generation of Levys now firmly at the helm.

Over the years, the store has seen its share of changes -- different locations, the openings and closings of branch stores, the upgrading of the merchandise mix and the addition of women's wear. But the retailing principles on which Levy's was founded still drive the store ...
