Most Promising New Men's Designer: Kris Van Assche
Is wonder boy Kris Van Assche (left), whose debut collection generated buzz among runway audiences and retailers alike, as cool as he's cracked up to be? Maybe it was Hedi Slimane's influence (Van Assche was formerly his assistant at both YSL and Dior Homme) or Helmut Lang's former time slot, but this up-and-comer fit as comfortably in Paris Fashion Week as the tailored suits that hugged his models. The designer's focused and fresh collection, which managed to balance everyday approachability with elegance, sure got our attention. His sophomore show will be the true test of whether he's really white-hot or just a flash in the pan, but meanwhile he's unquestionably the one to watch. First Runner-up: Greige Mfg....
