Four years ago Pat Tenore, 32, and Conan Hayes started Rvca (pronounced "roo-kah"), surprising the surf-obsessed Orange County establishment with artisanal T-shirts and understated, cut-and-sewn sportswear. Despite receiving the Surf Industry Manufacturers Association's (SIMA) "buzz brand" of the year award in May, Rvca is not an action sports label, according to Tenore. He bristles at being pigeonholed, and at convention in general.
