In recent seasons, the proletarian T-shirt, once worn to great effect by the A Streetcar Named Desire star, has been transformed into a lavishly embellished, hyper-designed men's fashion staple -- with the prices to match. Just as a pair of $200 jeans is no longer cause for sticker shock, consumers aren't blinking at T-shirts with three-figure price tags. At Saks Fifth Avenue, for example, there are Great China Wall T's embroidered with Swarovski crystals priced at $550, and at Maxfield in L.A., Ali Alborzi and Andrew McCarthy's Evidence of Evolution T's are selling briskly at $185 to $240.

Although those may be atypical examples, the premium T-shirt business -- those priced at about $50...
