LOS ANGELES -- One way to stand out in the increasingly crowded jean pool is to make your product from denim that simply isn't manufactured anymore. That's the strategy behind the Los Angeles-based Crate Denim line, which sources its denim exclusively from the discontinued stock of textile mills in the Southern U.S.

"It's about finding the best denim that nobody has," says 26-year-old cofounder and designer Chad Hilton, who launched the line with fellow 20-somethings Jason Fischer (28) and Tim Arnold (27).

The three won't divulge the names of specific mills, but Crate has already sourced enough deadstock denim to keep them in the blue bottoms business for the next six seasons. "It's denim that's not going to be spun...
