NEW YORK - Fine tailoring, formality and modernism emerged as central themes during Fashion Week here, as American designers proved to be on the same wavelength as the Europeans for fall '07.

In a season when many mourned the absence of Cloak and lamented the overwhelming odds against talented newcomers, the collections offered some causes for optimism-most notably the provocative creativity of Thom Browne.

But the biggest news for men's wear was the strong runway debut of Z Zegna. In one fell swoop, Zegna's diffusion label made its mark as a bona fide designer brand.
