NEW YORK - Uncle Sam is the newest player in the licensing game.

The U.S. Postal Service quietly previewed its new program of vintage postage stamp graphics at the recent MAGIC show and, according to Gary Thuro, its director of licensing, about a half dozen premium jeans and T-shirt makers are close to becoming the first apparel and accessory licensees to adopt them.

The vintage postage stamp, airmail and pony-express images were recently updated for apparel use by Maida Design, the New York graphic designers, Thuro said.

He noted the response to the designs at the Vegas show was "amazing from both the manufacturers as well as the major retailers we talked to. People particularly liked our vintage images...
