Jay Leno, on his late-night talk show, asked Jack Welch, the recently retired CEO of GE to recall an experience that would set the standard for his success in business. Mr. Welch told of a hockey game he played as a youth and recalled his team had lost a close game. He became upset and stormed off the ice. His mother approached him and said to him sternly, "If you don't know how to lose, YOU shouldn't be playing."

Mr. Welch said his mother taught him to see the world the way it is and to face the facts. Jack Welch, however, hasn't been on the losing side very often. His legacy at GE is legendary and he had one of the most triumphant runs of any CEO in America.
