Most MVS shops use the DEFRAG function in DASD storage management. DEFRAG combines small segments of DASD space that cannot be used, into larger segments that can be used for data allocations, which has a significant performance impact. Fragmentation occurs over time when a contiguous freespace is not fully used by an allocation, and the remainder is too small to be useful.
