DB2 V3 ESA data compression.

DB2 3.0 uses the Lempel-Ziv algorithm for data compression, as well as S/390 ESA compression techniques. The previous release took a different approach to compression, using a variation of the Huffman algorithm. Although compression reduces backup and provides DASD savings, it can result in greater CPU overhead and a longer index recovery time.

Lempel-Ziv is similar to PKZIP. In version 3.0 the compression algorithm is part of the Data Definition Language, and not an exit routine, which was the case in version 2.3. Version 3.0 is partition-sensitive, and can be very useful in applications that ...
