Downsizing and cooperative processing represent alternatives to the older, mainframe-centric approach to I/S. Cooperative processing leverages existing investments, but brings in a synergy with the rest of the organization. Downsizing, sometimes referred to as rightsizing, represents more of a migration away from the mainframe.
