SNA, unlike TCP/IP, is not capable of being routed because it maintains its Network Addressable Units (NAUs) through static tables. Nonetheless, it was designed to perform efficient data routing through its flow control procedures. This flow control is used by both NCP and VTAM to route Virtual Route (VR) traffic.
A VR is made up of two elements, a VR number, which is mapped to an Explicit Route (ER), and a Transmission Priority number. The VR is essentially a bidirectional, logical connection, whereas the ER is unidirectional. Multiple VRs can be defined over a single physical path. ...
