An analysis of the impact of the Internet on mainframe computing is presented. The Web is now a common front end for legacy applications, and there are several approaches to placing a browser interface on applications running on a mainframe back end. Some use dedicated screen scrapers, while others combine a screen scraper with a mainframe Web server. There are dumb-terminal, fat-client and thin-client approaches as well; enterprise models are shifting rapidly.
