Assessing an organization's Year 2000 (Y2K) effort recapitulates the phases of a sequential software development methodology. The problem and its requirements are defined, and specification, design and coding stages are followed by testing, operation and maintenance. Generally speaking, it is recommended that a single methodology and tool set be employed throughout the conversion project. However, companies that outsource a Y2K project may benefit by using a different tool for the second check.
