Europe's new currency, the Euro, coexists with national currencies as of Jan 1999, which it will do until Jan 1, 2002, when it is expected to become the only currency for 11 participating nations. Generally speaking, American companies are well along with their Year 2000 (Y2K) software fixes, but a much smaller percentage of US companies are prepared for the euro transition. Silicon Valley executives say readying a system to accommodate Y2K is different from managing a project to support euro currency. One of them cautions that combining Y2K and euro projects is probably not a good idea.
