Welcome to the first in a regular series of columns focused on the business of business intelligence, data warehousing and the applications these technologies enable, such as customer relationship management.

At first glance it might look like a lot of turf to cover, however, those familiar with my research and previous ESJ articles understand that I often take a big picture approach to analysis of technology market segments. When appropriate, I will be applying what I have coined the "technology perception reality check," or TPRC (see ESJ April 1998), to newly defined areas, such as knowledge management.
