An IBM S/390 engineer discusses his work with customers and ISVs and lessons about porting applications to OS/390. Stressing close coordination between technical personnel, project managers, upper-management sponsorship and the business case is crucial at project startup. The business case for ISVs should address how the resulting application will be marketed and sold, while that for in-house developers involves detailed ROI analysis. Project plans must consider risk management, staffing details and other issues at lower levels. A well-run project should make major progress within six months. Technical issues to consider early include whether an ISV is experienced with OS/390, what language the original software is written in, API dependencies and current and target architectures....
