Wyse Introduces Fatter Thin Clients.(Wyse Technology Winterm 8630LE, 8630LD, 8440XL)(Product Announcement)

Thin clients have evolved from simple green-screen terminals to solid-state machines that can run complex operating systems like Windows NT. Touting the simplified management and lower cost of thin clients, Wyse Technology Inc. has rolled out two new devices. The Wyse Winterm 8440XL and 8630LE both run embedded Windows NT and feature flash memory, allowing functionality approaching a PC. Out-of-the-box, neither unit has moving parts.

Wyse markets these devices as ideal solutions for enterprises that want the easier management of server-based computing, but need some code, such as a client for a database application, to execute locally. In addition, Wyse says the units are useful in environments where the network suffers outages, allowing data to be saved...
