IBM, Hitachi team to take on EMC. (News: the latest news on enterprise computing).(Brief Article)

IN APRIL IBM CORP. and Hitachi Ltd. formed two partnerships to better compete in the storage market. The companies pledged to create enterprise storage technologies and combine each of its hard drive businesses into a single company.

The announcement is clearly targeted at EMC Corp.'s dominance of enterprise storage. Big Blue and Hitachi--both currently offering SAN cabinet units--will share research and co-develop open-storage systems.

One particular focal point is on storage virtualization, which allows administrators to pool disk drives in an array and create virtual partitions across the pool. Dynamically allocating storage to applications or machines improves storage management flexibility.

Virtualization often comes with a big downside....
