Austin Pendleton directs the world premiere of Milan Stitt's The Runner Stumbles at Stamford, Conn.'s Hartman Theater (formerly the Palace Theatre), a vaudeville house saved from demolition by the Hartman Foundation. This flashback drama--addressing the eyebrow-raising affections between a nun and a priest--goes on to become one of the most celebrated plays of the Broadway season.
