"Too serious!" "How about a little humor?" "Lighten up!".

A recent survey of American Theatre subscribers yielded all sorts of eye-opening information about who the magazine's readers are (some 80 percent are from within the theatre profession) and what they value about it (the complete play scripts top the list). Thumbing through the "additional comments" section of the survey, I detected a refrain (see above) that's often heard at our in-house planning and self-critiquing sessions: Where's the funny stuff? Shouldn't a magazine devoted to the art of Aristophanes and Chris Durang be cracking a few jokes?
