NEW YORK: "Doug Aibel of New York's Vineyard Theatre called me up two years ago," says director Diane Paulus, "and asked if I'd heard of Laura Nyro. I said no, and thought I'd lost the job." Undeterred, Aibel commissioned Paulus and Bruce Buschel to create Eli's Coming, a new musical-theatre piece about the '70s female folk-music icon, currently running at the Vineyard.
Nyro was a poet and singer with a three-octave range. She sang jazz, gospel, rock, folk and fused Debussy, Bacharach and Coltrane into her music. ...
