Genji Ito, a world-theatre composer and musician, died in New York after a prolonged illness. Genji scored more than 25 productions for New York's La Mama ETC, where he had been resident composer since 1982. He was also the musical director of the New York City Ballet's Watermill, directed by Jerome Robbins, and a performer in Stephen Sondheim's Pacific Overtures on Broadway. In 1986, Genji received an Obie for sustained excellence in music.
