Lighting designer Jennifer Tipton is the winner of the substantial 2001 Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize, recognizing her three decades of lighting design for dance, theatre and opera productions. The award carries a $250,000 honorarium. Initiated in 1994, the Gish Prize honors "outstanding contribution to the beauty of the world and to man's enjoyment and understanding of life."
Playwright August Wilson was honored by the League of Chicago Theatres Foundation with an artistic leadership award at the league's third gala-benefit. The Pulitzer Prize-winner flew in to accept the award, appearing alongside the evening's salute honoree, Hope Abelson.
