Jan Koft: 1914-2002
I first met Jan Kott before he left Poland. I was in Warsaw as a guest of the Communist government. The interpreter and guide they provided me was showing me the sights and introducing me to leading lights in the Polish theatre and literature. Jan Kott was Exhibit Number One, and at lunch he was allowed to play that role by dominating the conversation, indeed turning it into a witty, rambling uninterruptible monologue.
