The National Theatre Conference, founded in 1925 and dedicated to the welfare and development of the American stage, held its annual meeting in January at New York's Players Club. The association's Person of the Year award went to actor Marian Seldes who, in turn, presented the Paul Green Foundation award to actor Kathleen Early. Other honorees were Naomi lizuka, who won the Barrie and Bernice Stavis Award for emerging playwrights, and Chicago's Goodman Theatre, which received the outstanding achievement award given yearly to a theatre institution.
