Jean Schiffman did a great job of describing the challenges and advantages of resident acting companies ("Staying Put"), but I don't think she fully captured what a different place a theatre can be when a group of actors is truly part of an organization. Staying put is certainly an advantage for some actors, but the presence of an acting company also gives an organization a sense of continuity and offers chances for extended collaboration that are rare in other contexts.
