Why should a theatre maintain a resident company of actors?
It was encouraging to note, in Jean Schiffman's examination of this fundamental question ("Staying Put," Dec. '01), that in the jobbed-in environment of many U.S. theatres, the ideal of permanent acting companies has not been lost. It is alive and well at such theatres as Rhode Island's Trinity Repertory Company and Massachusetts's American Repertory Theatre--and certainly at the Alley Theatre of Houston, where it remains for us an essential part of our identity.
