With sadness, many of us noted the sudden death of the new National Endowment for the Arts chair Michael Hammond after a mere week in office--a passing that has deprived the theatre field of a strong ally. A former composer in residence at Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, a co-founder of the Pepsico Summerfare festival and an avid theatre patron, Hammond was greeted by his colleagues at the Endowment as a man of sensitivity, compassion and intelligence. He will be deeply missed: we can only hope that his replacement will be a person of comparable artistic achievement.
