In 1986 Nobu McCarthy starred in my play As the Crow Flies at the Los Angeles Theatre Center, in a production helmed by the late avant-garde director Reza Abdoh. She was then in her early fifties, struggling with the arthritis that she battled for so much of her later life. Yet I watched her, in rehearsals, tackling Abdoh's stylized movements with an eager and unrestrained playfulness through which deep emotional truths shone.
