BECAUSE IT HOLDS OUT SUCH wonderful promise as a follow-up to What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day, Cleage's new novel--although a crowd-pleaser--is a disappointment. It suffers from second-novelitis, that peculiar virus that inflicts those who have to prove with their second effort that their initial success was something more than a fortuitous accident.
