100 YEARS AGO (1903) After runaway hit The Wizard of Oz takes Broadway by storm, producer Fred R. Hamlin and director Julian Mitchell commission a new show by composer Victor Herbert, hoping to replicate Oz's triumph. The result, Babes in Toyland, premieres in June at Chicago's Grand Opera House and goes on to make spectacular history in its own right with opulent sets and enduring tunes.
