When did I first become aware of the extraordinary Uta Hagen? Was it when I saw her as Desdemona in the electric production of Othello, with her then husband, Jose Ferrer, as Iago, and her then lover, Paul Robeson, as Othello? We all went to that production knowing the scandal--for it was that back then--but Uta wiped it from our minds, made us see without doubt that it was Othello, Iago and Desdemona up there, and not Paul, Jose and Uta.
Could it have been Ugo Betti's Island of Goats? I think not, though I will never forget Uta, standing there alone, on a rocky hill, bleating ...
