120 YEARS AGO (1885)

Jerome Kern is born in New York City. He will go on to write more than 1,000 songs and 100 complete scores before his death in 1945, collaborating with Oscar Hammerstein II on such shows as Sunny and Show Boat. Kern will also dabble in film, writing scores for several movies, including Swing Time, starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. The movie will be adapted for the stage in 2003 under the title Never Gonna Dance.
