Re: "The Misfits: Recollecting the cockeyed passion of 1960s Off-Off Broadway history" (Nov. '04): Thank you for Oliver Mayer's reminder that we young, foolhardy theatremakers are not alone.
I am 22 years old and I love the possibility of the theatre, but I hate most of the shows I see. My friends and I work eight hours a day and are exhausted by the time we begin rehearsals. We have student debt in the tens of thousands of dollars. We have no money to rent a theatre, advertise or pay royalties, buy sets or costumes or lighting equipment. We are consistently undervalued by the older artists around us. We cannot afford to register our fledgling companies as not-for-profits and therefore do not qualify for grant-based assistance.
