Atiny ship navigates the treacherous sea near the North Pole and dodges icebergs as large as the menacing clouds that hang in the pale green sky--so low they seem to swallow the miniscule vessel, making it temporarily disappear. In this austere landscape, described by the ship's captain Robert Walton in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein as the "country of eternal light," all human endeavors seem small--which, paradoxically, magnifies their significance.
