Festival watch.(trends & events)(Brief Article)

American Theatre, February, 2005

SAN DIEGO and MONTGOMERY, ALA.: If this is February, it must be Black History Month. In San Diego, a three-day festival of African-American performance and culture, the Kuumba Fest, runs Feb. 25-27 at San Diego Repertory Theatre's Lyceum Theatre. Now in its 13th year, the festival promotes positivity, creativity and heritage with its theme, "Black to Glory: Mind, Body and Soul," says its artistic director Daj-Ahn Blevins. The event opens with an African market place festooned with the sounds of a jazz band, the drum call of African dancers and a royal pageant of princesses and warriors. And an Apollo Theatre of Harlem--style talent competition, Late Night at the Lyceum, will be followed, on the final day, by a gospel showcase.
