In memoriam.(Obituary)

American Theatre, February, 2005

Cy Coleman -- renowned composer of such Broadway hits as Little Me and Sweet Charity--died in November of a heart attack at age 75. He was at work on the revision of Sweet Charity's score for a planned Broadway revival this spring. Born Seymour Kaufman in New York City, Coleman was a classical pianist in his childhood and a jazz player for much of his adult life. He won Tony awards for his scores to The Will Rogers Follies and On the Twentieth Century (both with lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green) and City of Angels (with lyrics by David Zippel). Coleman's most recent musical, The Great Ostrovsky, premiered at Philadelphia's Prince Music Theater this past year and snagged the composer a Barrymore Award for its score.
