PARIS: The Nov. 23 premiere of Peter Eotvos's opera, Angels in America, at the Theatre du Chatelet, was one of the most anticipated events of the fall season in Paris. Aware of the media attention paid to the opera, Canal scheduled the French broadcast of Mike Nichols's telefilm of the Tony Kushner drama two days later. The opera was also aired on France's new gay TV channel, Pink TV, on World AIDS day in December.

Commissioned by the Chatelet, Angels in America is Eotvos's third opera. The Hungarian composer himself conducted the premiere, which was staged by 28-year-old Philippe Calvario, and designed by one of France's most distinguished theatre artists, Richard Peduzzi.
