90 YEARS AGO (1915) Straight-shooting New York Times critic Alexander Woollcott--later immortalized as the character Sheridan Whiteside in The Man Who Came to Dinner--starts a heated feud with producers the Shubert Brothers by panning their new play, Taking Chances. The Shuberts counter with an ad reading "Do not believe everything you see in the notices today" and ban Woollcott from their theatres.

Following a Times/Shubert court battle, Woollcott wins not only reentry to the Shubert domain but a hefty raise. 50 YEARS AGO (1955) Tennessee Williams's Cat on a Hot Tin Roof premieres at Broadway's Morosco Theatre, directed by Elia Kazan.
