SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH: Having earned his design degree from Yale University and briefly worked on Broadway in the 1950s, Ariel Ballif could have had a national profile. But he abandoned the big city to establish, in 1966, a small, now-defunct company, Theatre 138, Utah's first stage dedicated to contemporary and alternative works. A decade after his death, Ballif's private collection of set and costumes designs was donated to the special collections department of the University of Utah's J. Willard Marriott Library.
