SAN ANTONIO, TEX: Before Josef Svoboda, there was Frantisek Troster. Never heard of him? A giant of Czech scenic design, whose work from 1936 to the 1960s was immensely influential, Troster (1904-68) taught Svoboda, Ladislav Vychodil, Marta Roszkopfova and Jaroslav Malina most everything they knew.

Troster's works, unfortunately, had been locked up in storage and were rediscovered only in 2003 by his son. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Troster's long-hidden set designs are the central focus of Metaphor and Irony 2: Contemporary Czech Scenic and Theatre Costume Design, on view at the McNay Art Museum and at University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio through April 3.
