"AS AN ORIENTAL, YOU WILL BE LUSTED for, sought after, even kept," Anna May Wong instructs a blonde actress in the play China Doll. "You will give him the biggest boner of his entire pathetic life, but there will be no wedding bells for you. Because you are never good enough."

Wong got so good at playing the evil Oriental that in the late 1940s she was hired to teach Caucasian actors how to be exotic: "Repeat after me: I am sandalwood. I am jasmine. Say it like you believe it."
