LOS ANGELES: The life and short stories of Franz Kafka metamorphose into an eclectic medley of performance styles and diverse tales for Odyssey Theatre's KOAN ensemble, guided by artistic director Ron Sossi, in Kafka Thing, running through April 10. Over six months, through reading, research and improv, KOAN's eight members developed a script that represents more than 40 of Kafka's fictions--including a five-minute "Metamorphosis"--through what Sossi calls a "myriad of characters," including Kafka himself. "The Hunger Artist" (with Luis Zambrano, Alan Abelew and Deana Cignoni, in photo) serves as a metaphor for the estranged writer and as the "connective tissue" for the whole piece.
