In 1827, the powerful image of a giraffe walking from Marseilles to Paris took France by storm. The first giraffe to be seen in Europe since the Renaissance was sent as a gift from Africa to the French king. It caused sufficient attention to create fashion imitations, including textiles and hairdos "a la Giraffe." And her solitary elegance, witnessed by a young Gustave Eiffel, is said to have inspired his famous tower, the very symbol of Paris.
