Lehman Engel, Broadway conductor and founder of the BMI Musical Theatre workshop, is born. Engel will go on to conduct the original productions of Wonderful Town, Fanny, Li'l Abner, Do Re Mi, Call Me Mister and The Consul, and win Tony Awards for outstanding direction in 1951 and 1953.
