Those of us soldiering in the arts field in the late 1980s remember the controversies surrounding Andres Serrano and Robert Mapplethorpe in the museum world and Karen Finley, John Fleck, Holly Hughes and Tim Miller in our own field. It was a time when the arts dominated the front page, when televangelists railed about the arts contributing to moral decay, and when the National Endowment for the Arts teetered on the brink of collapse.
