NEW YORK CITY: For her 13th birthday, Daddy has promised to give Daughter the necklace of 13 beads that so fetchingly encircle her ailing Mommy's neck. But then the dog keels over, and the kitten uses up its ninth life. And on the day Daughter receives her present, dearest Mommy--"How pale she was with strawberry mouth and milk skin / Pale as a ghost"--is supplanted in the battle for sexual ascendance.
