Drama queen.(Sandra Bernhard)(Brief Article)
American Theatre, December, 2005
NEW YORK CITY: Not Sandra Bernhard, silly. It's Sarah--as in Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923). She was the original drama queen, the most famous actress of the 19th century--though (like the contemporary Bernhard) she was deemed neither the most beautiful (too skinny for the era) nor the most talented (Eleanora Duse, anyone?). But the divine Bernhardt knew how to work it: Her wit, temper tantrums, her vaunted French patriotism, her sheer willingness to stunt herself, catapulted her to superstardom, even earning her the nick-name "Sarah Barnum."
