Last month's American Theatre, for all its glorious new design and inspiring coverage of artists and theatres, was an issue that also provoked larger discussions about our health as a field. Ben Pesner's superb analysis of Theatre Facts 2004 made the overall trends quite clear in many ways. We learned, among other things: 1) that our collective health is shakier than it was five years ago; 2) that our successes often stem from cutting, rather than from growth; and 3) that audiences are slipping away from us at a disturbing rate.
